Katchup

Been busy mostly with getting back in shape the last few months.  So not too much gaming going on but I'm going out for 6 miles runs and did 3 miles in 25 minutes the other day.

Last week and this week I did manage to get in Warhammer games.  Last week Keith played the Chaos Dwarves and I used the Orcs he used to use.  Orcs where losing numbers fast from the start but once combat started the CDs missed with all their attacks in the first round and then failed their most important leadership test (just don't roll over a 10).  This week however I used a fluffy all Orc list and was easily beaten by Warriors of Chaos.  Note-to-self: keep a better army in the car for when playing against a hard list.  For a few years now I've been focusing on models I like for WH and 40K instead of focusing on making hard lists.  Normally I can overcome the disadvantage but it seems to be getting harder and harder.

I picked up the new 40K book finally and hope to read it this weekend.  Hopefully my scout heavy Space Marines fair better in this edition but I'm guess it'll be about the same.  Seeing this new model however does make me want to play my old Orks again...

...but it would take a lot of work to fill out the Orks I have and make a playable army.  I haven't used them  in a few rule-books plus they are the first army I painted so they look very sub-par.

Anyways, I plan to head out to Crossroads again in another week.  Maybe I'll try to go on Wednesdays again when I can't make it on Fridays.

LARP Bust

I am sad to say that the LARP we tried was a bit of a bust.  Great back story but poor execution during the event resulting in lots of waiting around for things that were not even that fun.  Anyways, going to look at a few others and hopefully find a good one.

New LARP Prep...Pistols

A few of us on the team are going to have the pistol skill which lets you use NERF guns.  It is required that you paint the guns so I was finally able to apply all those fig painting techniques to something different...

Doctor Court Returns!

Bad news:  It is official, no 40K tournament this month.

Good news:  A bunch of my LARPing friends picked the next new game to try and the first event is in just over a week.  It is a post-apocalyptic game called Second Dawn (http://seconddawnlarp.com/) so hopefully it is good.  The best part however is that for the first time I'm going to try LARPing as Doctor Arthur Court!  For an OS friends out there who remember him I'll be playing the older version but I do plan on carrying around dilly beans and being so ultra goody good that it hurts.  I'm also going to try to incorporate some of the secret OS history into the character but I'll need to change things around a bit to make it work in this game world.

I'll post picks once I have the costume figured out.  I'm likely going like someone out of Firefly but I'm not completely decided yet.  Interesting fact about LARPing, I haven't been motivated to workout all spring but as soon I decided that I'm playing I'm ready to workout twice a day.

April Tournament...List [Reloaded]

Updated list with little tweaks.  Basically the same but changed the captain, transport, and some vehicle options so I can squeeze in a Land Speeder.  If I had the models ready I'd go with a chaplain and side guns on the predator but I'm not going to have them ready in time.

April Tournament...Fluff [Working Version]

On the Founding of the Obsidian Fists:

"Oh no, oh no, oh NO!"

"Keep it down over there; I’m trying to listen to the latest inquisitor proclamations from sector 125."

"I…I can’t believe this. They are so going to send me back to the Department of Ogryn Affairs after this."

"Believe what? What did you do now?"

"I was reviewing the extermination orders and I must have mixed up the papers when I dropped them and the declarations of high honor the other day."

"You didn’t send them out without reviewing them I hope."

"I was running late Thursday, I got caught behind that honor the Emperor march, so when I got to work I kinda…well…sorta rushed things."

"Let me see the orders. You were just late that day because the new Sisters of Battle swimsuit edition came out that day and you had to get one that day. Let's see, this one is fine. No one is going to notice that this planet is going to be cleansed..."

"But…but…sector 287…I...I order the extermination of every Adeptus Astartes chapter in the sector."
“IDIOT! What were you thinking! When word gets to the High Lords that there is no marine presence in sector 287 they are going to investigate, and when they find out you can’t keep two piles of data files straight you’ll be demoted to Official Dilly Beans Counter of Cadia! IDIOT!”

“Wha…wha…what do we do? You…you can fix this right? You can cover for me? I…I covered for you that time you accidentally purged the systems of Squat home worlds. I...I covered for you.”

*sigh* “You know I still feel bad that no one even remembers who they are anymore. I thought that someone would write about them in one of those trade publications but instead they’ve completely disappeared from Imperium history. Hmm. Alright we can fix this. It is too late to cancel the orders but I know the girl who handles new founding applications, she could slip something in to get another chapter in that sector.”

“The girl in New Founding? You…you know her? Isn’t she the one who was on Pimp-My-Land Raider?”

“She was. We went out a few times but she started getting all religious. After she started attending daily services with the marine chaplains she got WAY to fearless for me; I had to break it off.”

“…WOW…you dated her. She is really pretty but I try to stay away from her after hearing about that incident with librarian and the digital weapons in her bra. You…you figure with all those physic abilities he could have seen that coming.”

“No you don’t want to mess with her. Her sister is a Death Cult Assassin you know. Anyways, I’ll talk to her see if we can get a new chapter founded out there. No one would notice anything then. Pull up the hologram of the sector.”

“Do..do..do we get to give her details on this new founding?”

“Sure, sure. So this are the two planet are being exterminated because of your mix-up, I assume the are going to be void bombed from space so we’ll avoid those planets. Oh look here, pirate activity is heavy near this asteroid belt.”

“Pirates? You what the new founding to be pirate marines?”

“Stop being an idiot. We drop a record in the Chaos Record System and then we have two or three chapters meet here to destroy the pirate strongholds. On their victory a new chapter is founded, bata-bing Space Marines are once again in sector 287.”

“Oh can we pick who founds it? Can we plan out the new chapter? This is more exciting then toss the Ratling night at Chaffer’s Last Stand!”

*sigh* “Sure, whatever you want. Imperial Fists are a good choice; they are only two sectors away. And look here, according to the Gene-Seed Database they already have enough stock ready to go for starting a new founding.”

“What about Raven Guard! They look all spiffy in that black armor. Or Ultramarines!”

“Aren’t most of the marines already Ultramarines already? No more Ultramarines. And no Blood Angels or Space Wolves either. There is only 1000 of each and yet they are in ½ the Imperium’s battles it seems.”

“Can we pick what they look like? And what they specialize in?”

“It does need to go one the application. Just don’t go to crazy.”

“Hmm…I like yellow but the Imperial Fist yellow is a bit much, maybe a squash color.”

“Sure, call them the Squash Marines. No one is going to think that was strange. How about Idiot Marines?”

“We should name them after the fiercest and bravest animal in all old Terra, the Honey Badger. Here watch this holograph about them, they don’t give a shit.”

"Listen, I’m going to help you but don’t make me watch any more of your old Terra holograms. You want a name, this asteroid belt is known for having a large concentration of Obsidian, so combine that with Imperial Fists and you have Obsidian Fists. Done."

“They should have black hands then, can we give them black hands and…and black weapons too. That would be keen.”

“Fine. I’ll drive the over to see her after lunch. I need to go pick-up the Land Speeder anyways, it has been in the shop to get a new stabilizer. Can you believe they gave me a lousy Razorback as a loner?"

"I hear Rhino’s get much better fuel millage, and you have all that cargo room."

"Why am I even bringing this up, you don’t know anything about vehicles. That Chimera you drive is practically pre-heresy.”

“Oh, do we need to pick something for them to specialize in?”

“We should just to make it look official. Let’s see what did the two chapters you killed off specialized in. Hmm, trench warfare for this one and hit-and-run for that one, that is not going to work out well.”

“How about FLEXIBILITY! They can do it all and…and they are fierce, like honey badgers. Put no drop pods, my uncle's cyber-mastif was killed by one a few years ago. It landed on his dog house while he was asleep, poor fella.”

“Sure, sure. Now promise me you’re not going to accidentally have any other planets purged. You know our reviews are coming up and I need a raise to afford that new model house servitor, they do windows now.”

“Oh I have one of those, Julie is real nice.”

“A girl one? You don’t do things with it do you? Never mind, I’m getting some bad images in my head just thinking about it.”

April Tournament...List

Here it is.  I had to take a few things (like the Land Raider) because I wanted to avoid a comp penalty and I didn't have a ton of unit choices right now.  Not close to optimal for winning games but that'll make beating a over-optimized list that much better.

April Tournament...Painting

So I might be going to the April tournament at Crossroad Games.  The problem however, other then the usual issues of kids all the other things I need to take care of, the force I would use is not painted enough where I'll have it finished in 11 days.

Not the best picture I admit but this is the first 1500 points I'm going to finish.  I have multiple vehicles that need a first coat in sections (and second & third coats), the details on the terminators are not done, the scouts need to be cleaned up and detailed, and I haven't started any of  the Celtic scroll work on the vehicles.  I was going to do something simple like this (not these colors but this pattern):

Once that is all done I'll flock, ink, let dry a few days, flock some more, and then dull coat.  So in 11 days that is not all going to happen but I guess I'll see how much I can get done.

What I built the over the last week or two...

No painting over the last two weeks but I have finished building a few things:

Going clockwise-ish:

  • 1 Land Speeder w/ multi-melta
  • 1 Land Speeder Scout w/ assault cannon
  • 1 Land Speeder Typhoon w/ heavy bolter
  • 4 Scouts w/ sniper rifle
  • 4 Scouts w/ shotgun
  • 4 Scouts w/ cc weapon and pistol
  • 1 Scout w/ heavy bolter
  • 1 Scout Sergeant w/ power weapon and pistol
  • 1 Scout Sergeant w/ power fist and pistol (going to swap it to shotgun once I have another, that is why this one is not primed yet)
  • 1 Space Marine w/ plasma cannon
  • 1 objective marker w/ bits from the scout boxes

The Typhoon was another one of those models someone else wrecked but I was able to salvage with bits from other models.  I actually had to make it a Typhoon because it didn't even come with doors in the back.  It still needs some TLC in spots where the glue shows but now that it is primed I can clean those up easily.  The only thing I'm unhappy with is the objective marker which I over-primed by accident.  I really like the bits so hopefully it looks better once painted.

Now the Land Speeder Scout, I expect to get a number of comments about the fact that the assault cannon is the least effective choice out of the weapon options at 35 points but IT LOOKS SO COOL! Sure, it is giving away kill points just by taking it but at least it'll look good doing it.  (Or I hope it does, we'll see how the paint job goes.)  For now I'll be taking a 10 man Scout unit and break it up into two units of 5 if it is not a kill point scenario.  If it is a kill point game then I'll likely leave the 10 Scouts together and bring in the Land Speeder Scout by itself from reserve unless I see some advantage for doing otherwise.  If that goes well I'll maybe get another Land Speeder Scout and 5 more Scouts built...maybe.

Bluetoothless

Dear Microsoft,

Thank you for telling me I needed the newest Broadcom Bluetooth driver.  I took your advice and I'm now unable to use Bluetooth to connect my computer to my stereo.  Please say hello to Broadcom for me also.

Sincerely,
Michael

First try at Space Marine fluff

If you've played 40K at all you know that there is a ton of existing chapters and most all of them have some sort of crazy bad color scheme. I do not want to spend a ton of time painting mine since I already have too many other projects. Instead I was going to go with a simple brown highlighted by a few other small areas of color. However, they ended up looking like baby poop so I ended up painting them differently. :(

If I had kept them like baby poop I was going to make up my own chapter and use the following as my fluff. This was my first version so please excuse it being a bit of a mess:

“Dear Aunt Harrietta,

Hopefully this message be reaching you before you reach Terra and you be having your date with the Emperor’s Throne.  There not be much news to tell but I figure I should be sending you something to read and hopefully keep your mind off of whatever they do to those with our gift out there.

Ma is fine but pa be having issues with the gout again.

In other news, you knows that old Imperial Fist whoo-hah’s fortress-weapon storage-depot thing up in the mountains?  The one they only come to check once every fifty years or something like that?  Seems some underworld types been sneaking in there and be stealing things to sell on the black market.  Guess they found out how much a power armor cod piece goes for on the black market and they be figuring the risk be worth it.

Anyways, seems the Adeptus Arbites found them out and they been fighting all over.  Next thing you know they find space whoo-hah’s sleeping in there in some super-secret-under-level and they go ahead and wake them up.  Next demon marines are attacking the fortress and our Arbites boys with the half awake space whoo-hah’s are all fighting back.  Pretty soon missiles be flying down here in the city and messing things all up.  Even messing up the dilly bean’s I keep stored in the pantry!

After a few months of this the Imperial Fist whoo-hahs show up and the demon things all leave.  Folks start talking about maybe the underworld types been working for demon types but they all dead now and Arbites boys did a good job.  Next the whoo-hahs all talking about starting a whoo-hah marine chapter here and immediately start poking holes in our Arbites boys to make them into more damn whoo-hahs!

So where I be going with this?  The head leader types all come to me asking if I my data chips I can recommend some fearless animal type for them to name their chapter after.  After cousin Willy got caught with those barn animals, the sick bastard, they locked him up and I inherited all his animal data chips.  I been keeping them in the basement but if the whoo-hahs want a name I can find one for them.  So what did I come up with?  The hard-ass double bitch slapping Honey Badger.  According to all the records they be the most fearless animal ever and I’m including a data clip so you can see.

Now the whoo-hahs, they not be too sure about it.  Seems some be liking the name Hill Giants, and others the Trenchers or some other dumb-ass name.  So I just spat on the head whoo-ha’s boot and told him I’d be deserving an ass kicking if I not be right and then I turned on the video.

So our planet be the home of the Honey Badgers for now.  They say they going to be doing some training for a few seasons before going off planet but we’ll see.  Not going to miss them when they leave but maybe they can keep something evil from eating us.

Anyways, Gill and the twins say hi and all that.  Hopefully I can be getting a few more letters to you before they eat your brain or do whatever they do to psychers out there.

Sincerely,
Otto Mutter IV, Vice Charmain of Dilly Bean Production, Master Dilly Beaner

PS. I sold your house.”

For my wife...

Michael: Getting ready to heat up soup.
Sent at 4:40 PM on Wednesday
Jeanette: STEW. Outside waiting for Jenn.
Michael: Sure, I'll stew a bit before I warm up the soup.
Jeanette: Do not poo on my efforts!
Sent at 4:49 PM on Wednesday
Michael: It is just pee, I poo-ed on your pillow.

New Space Marine Army

With schedule changes and the constant need to be available for other things on my usual Warhammer night I decided to make the swap back over to 40K after not playing it for several years.  Back when I used to play I was doing it all the time.  Before I used a highly modified zombie Imperial Guard army that include “ghost-a-fied” Witch Hunters; they were fun to use.  Before that I used Speed Freak Orks.  However because of all the rules and codex changes I’ve decided to keep all those packed away and instead build all the Space Marines I’ve had laying around for years.  (I'll post about my rule change frustrations in the future.)

For those of you who haven’t played 40K for years, for some reason the longer you play 40K the more Space Marines you pick up without even realizing it.  I picked up most of mine from buying the box set to get the mini-rulebooks and from running into kids who wanted to unload their poorly built and barely primed figs.  The last few things I really wanted to try I picked up at Crossroad Games which I highly recommend for all your gaming needs.

So what do I have?  Here is my working list of everything…

Built or mostly built:

  • 1 Lysander (picked up from some auction for cheap and it is a good looking model)
  • 1 Captain (from the box set)
  • 1 Chaplin (was $1 but had to strip a lot of paint off of it)
  • 5 Terminators with 1 heavy flamer (from the box set but added Imperial Fist arms that I ordered through Crossroads)
  •  10 Tactical Squad Marines with flamers and missile launchers x 4.  (from box set and some kids who were dumping stuff, I wish they had some more weapon variety but oh well)
  •  5 Space Marines with lascannons or a plasma cannon that can be subbed in to the 4 tactical squads or used to turn one tactical squad into a devastator squad (from the same kids)
  • 3 Rhino/Razorbacks built so they can be used either way.  I also have turrets to make 2 of them Predators (also from some kid and maybe a store deal)
  • 1 Land Raider (some kid nearly ruined it but I was able to get it looking right again, had to glue the doors shut)
  • 5 Scouts with sniper rifles (new from Crossroads)
  • 5 Scouts with pistol and weapon (new from Crossroads)
  •  5 Scouts with shotguns (new from Crossroads)
  • 1 Land Speeder Scout (new from Crossroads, I’ve yet to see anyone even use one yet)
  •  1 Land Speeder (no idea)

In a pile so I need to decide if I want to build them:

  • 2 More Land Speeders (not sure yet if I’ll build, one I got from some kid and is missing a lot pieces so I might turn it into an objective)
  • 10ish more Space Marines (not likely to finish so I don’t need more than 40 marines)
  •  5 Assault Marines (not likely to finish since I’m going to have too many Fast choices)
  •  2 Predators

Things I want to get still:

  • 1 More Land Speeder Scout (maybe, I don’t want to be spaming the same unit but I like the idea of using lots of scout units)
  •  3 or 5 Scout Bikers (maybe)
  • 5 More Scouts but with bolters (maybe, I want to be able to keep to units of 10 and right now I have 15)
  •  5 More Terminators (just so I have a full unit of 10 but with the point cost I’m not sure if I would ever field a full unit)

As you can see this is more than enough 2000 point game, I might even be able to get to 3000.  I wish I had more options (such as plasma guns or melta guns) but with getting deals from other people you’re kinda stuck with what they had.  I might try to fix this with a bits order from GW but we’ll see.

Why so many scouts?  Half the 40K armies are some version of Space Marines and of those I almost never see anyone use scouts.  I like trying to win with unusual things as opponents seem more engaged when dealing with something they don’t normally see.  Most importantly, I like how the scouts look.  I’m a big fan of picking models that look good and building fluff and lists around that.

I the future I’ll make more posts about how I paint them, the fluff, and the lists I end up using.

End of Obsidian Shore

For years Kimlex and I played NWN2.  Mostly we bounced around various game worlds trying to find one we liked and eventually we ended up on a small game called Obsidian Shore.  At first what I liked about OS was that it stressed role-play but still had plenty of other things to do.  What also made it enjoyable was that it had a system for limiting PC levels so you always felt like you were advancing but the power level between characters was not so great as to destroy the chance for having fun.  Lastly and most importantly there were many many people who were fun to play with.

When OS was good it was great.  Being open to the public and run by volunteers there was always someone complaining about something but overall the DMs ran interesting plots and players developed engaging characters.  However, new games coming out and the lack of interest in the direction of plot lead to a minimal level of interest by both staff and players.

While seeming to have ended the game had a shakeup of staff and Obsidian Shore was reborn.  Several times the game world started to reach the level of interest it had years before but it could not be sustained as more and more competing games came out on the market.  Around December the server was turned off and a few months later the end made official.

I wanted to make this post to thank all the people who made OS special to me.  It started as just an online game world but became a true community.  There are many staff members and players who need to be thanked for their time investment with developing the world, their financial investment for hosting the world, and their creative investment for always pushing to make it better.  It is over now    but hopefully I’ll see you all again in some other game.

(If any old OS folks find this, I have copies of everything that was stored on the server if you decide that you ever need it.)

First Post

Yes, the world needs another useless blog.  Hopefully someone at some point in future human history finds a small part of what I write here interesting.
